Dean (Will Smith) is a black practicing lawyer with a beautiful family life and a bright future. On Christmas Eve, Dean meets a friend he hasn't seen in a long time. Since then, Dean's life has undergone earth-shaking changes.

The film is set in a small town in Alsace in eastern France in the 1960s. The heroine played by Binoche runs a school that trains teenage girls to become perfect housewives. The sudden death of her husband had a great impact on her career.
